K1 Speed in North San Diego County hosted their second round of their challenge GP race series this past weekend with a number of talented drivers on hand all chasing after a podium finish on the reverse-ran layout. Double qualifying rounds would set the pace for the mains with Justin Tolman taking the overall pole position for the night.
B-Main drivers would start off the night with Hector Cruz leading the field at the drop of the green flag on the rolling start, he would hold onto the lead for a majority of the race with 5 laps to go and the field all started to mix it up. Jeremy McGrath would make his way through the field forward up to the front on lap 9 but fall back a few positions to where he was unable to recover. Tyler Sterkel would take over the lead with Hector holding onto second with the rest of the field battling back and forth between 3rd 4th and 5th making for a great show for everyone on hand. The checkered flag came out with Tyler Sterkel taking the win, Hector Cruz Jr would hang onto second, and Christina Castro would wind up taking third.
The night would close out with the A-Main drivers taking the track with Justin Tolman on pole leading the field into turn one on the green flag rolling start. Justin’s Challenge GP experience allowed him to remain out front fir the entire race. Meanwhile the rest of the field remained pretty tight through out the duration of the event with a good battle mid-pack between Matt Merrill, Jon Simms, and Ian Enz who would all swap positions back and forth all looking for a way to put some distance on the rest of the field. With the checkered flag showing on the podium Justin Tolman would go on to take the win followed by Jared Buccola in second and Matt Merrill taking third to close out the top three.
With round two closed out drivers are looking to round three next month and a chance at a podium finish, along with a solid position in the overall points chase. This six race series will be at the half way point and the overall championship is going to heat up the closer we get to the final round of competition.
