K1 Speed Seattle / Redmond - March 2009 Challenge GP Results!

On March 29th, K1 Speed Seattle held its third race of the 2009 Challenge GP series, and the racing action was intense! There were a few new faces in the line-up on Sunday, including Angela Shur, the first female racer to compete in a Challenge GP event at our Seattle / Redmond indoor karting center, and some familiar faces showed up as well to defend their positions. Sean Naslund, the current points leader of the Seattle series, exclaimed, “This was the best racing we’ve had so far!” Needless to say, everyone came away from the event with a smile on their face, which is what we love to see at K1 Speed!

The race started with Sopurkh Khalsa in the pole position, followed by Randy Olivarez and Sean Naslund. At the drop of the green flag the battle begun, and there were position changes in the first lap! Sean Naslund took advantage of the inside line at the start and managed to overtake Randy in the first turn. The fight for second was fiercely competitive, with Sean playing defense against an aggressive and very fast Randy Olivarez! The second and third-place contenders slowly started to gain ground on Sopurkh in the midst of their battle, and it wasn’t long before the three were racing around the track nose to tail, only inches between them.

Going into the Turn 3 hairpin in lap 5, the mounting excitement reached a crescendo! Sean was maintaining a very close second-place position to Sopurkh as the pack approached turns 1 and 2. Through the large sweeper, Sean was able to keep his momentum up and take the line from Sopurkh along the back stretch. Diving into the hairpin at Turn 3, Sean held the line and nudged his way past Sopurkh to take over first place.

Sean was able to lead for the remainder of the race, utilizing brilliant defensive driving against the second and third-place drivers. As the pack leaders started running into the back field, Sean’s defensive strategy became a bit more complicated, but in the end, he was able to hold off the advancing competition. Sean Naslund ended up maintaining his winning streak for the 2009 K1 Speed Seattle / Redmond Challenge GP series, taking first place in the final event ahead of Sopurkh in 2nd and Randy in 3rd! With his 3rd place finish, Randy Olivarez ended up moving up into the second spot for cumulative points! At this point, the series is still up for grabs, and we look forward to the next Challenge GP race in Seattle, which takes place on April 26th – if you think you have what it takes, we invite you to come in and race!

K1 Speed Anaheim - March 2009 Reverse GP Results

On March 25th, K1 Speed Anaheim held its Reverse Grand Prix race, and some of our regular competitors were there to put on a great show! After a 12-lap practice race that allowed the drivers to familiarize themselves with the reverse configuration of our Anaheim track, the 14-lap qualifying session began. The qualifying session was clean and free of incident, as each driver was doing their part to stay clear of other competitors as they tried to set the fast lap. In the end, the pole position was set by Paul Ciralli, with a very fast lap time of 29.53 seconds. Taylor Hays ended up qualifying in second position, 0.23 seconds behind Paul, and 0.30 seconds behind Taylor was David Messimer, rounding out the top 3.

The final 16-lap race was a close match between Paul Ciralli and Taylor Hays. At the beginning of the race, Paul managed to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field, but midway through, Taylor Hays started catching up and applying some pressure on Paul. As Paul and Taylor made their way around the track bumper-to-bumper, the excitement built among the spectators. Taylor was putting up a great fight, but in the end, he wasn’t able to make the pass, as Paul vigorously defended his position. The top 3 qualifiers ended up finishing the race in order, with Paul Ciralli taking 1st place, Taylor Hays finishing in 2nd, and David Messimer finishing in 3rd. We congratulate Paul, Taylor and David for their well-deserved podium finishes! Our next event in Anaheim will be our famous night race on April 29th – be sure to stay tuned for the results!

K1 Speed-sponsored 2009 King Taco Super Trucks Series Begins

The first race of the 2009 King Taco Super Trucks series at the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, California was run this past weekend and it looks like it is going to be another exciting season of racing! Defending 2008 division champion Pat Mintey Jr. took home the win, once again setting the bar for the competition. However, it was Ryan Fortier who we feel put on the best show. Ryan Fortier, from Canoga Park, California, advanced the most positions during the course of the race and won the “K1 Speed Hard Charger” award! Everyone at K1 Speed would like to congratulate Ryan Fortier for his solid effort, and we wish him the best of luck in future races.

Also taking home an award was Grant Hebner, who ended up winning the “K1 Speed Fast Lap” award by setting the fastest lap in qualifying. Grant was presented with his award during the autograph session, and though he wasn’t able to win the race, he had a respectable finish in the Top Ten. The next K1 Speed-sponsored King Taco Super Trucks race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale is April 4th, and we will be sure to post the results!

Channel 6 San Diego Visits K1 Speed
On Friday, March 20, 2009, Channel 6 San Diego – The CW – visited K1 Speed Carlsbad to film two segments for their popular morning feature “Where’s Ruben?” Our general manager Jeff Gordon did several interviews with Ruben Galvan, a well-known television and radio personality in the San Diego area, and even oversaw a couple of races in which Ruben put up a valiant effort against the competition! Ruben enthusiastically took on the challenge of racing our electric karts around our indoor track, and wasn’t deterred by the drivers fighting for position around him! The event was great fun and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. We look forward to working with Channel 6 San Diego again in the future!

Exclusively limited to just 50 racers, our indoor go kart racing marathon will let competitors go head-to-head at all 5 of our Southern California karting centers in one day! Taking place on Sunday, May 24th, 2009, our indoor karting marathon will consist of 2 races on each of our 7 Southern California tracks, for a total of 14 races. At the end of the day, competitors’ best lap times from all 14 races will be accumulated, and the individual who has the lowest combined overall time will be crowned champion. Much like a WRC Special Stage, the K1 Speed Racing Marathon rewards precision driving over aggressive overtaking. This package is a fantastic deal for karting enthusiasts, and includes transportation between locations, goody bags with sponsor merchandise, a special K1 Speed t-shirt, food and drinks, and exclusive WRC-style trophy cups for the winners. The racing marathon will begin at our Irvine location, with pre-registration occurring at 7:45AM and the first racing session starting at 8:00AM. Races will be run on both tracks at our Irvine location and each racer will have two opportunities per track to set the fast lap. After a light breakfast, the group will be taken by VIP tour bus to the next event in Carlsbad. In Carlsbad, lunch will be served during the event so that individuals can eat while they wait for their turn on the track. Race Three will take place at K1 Speed Ontario on both tracks, and complimentary snacks and beverages will be available. Upon completion of the Ontario race, the group will be driven to our brand-new Torrance location for Race Four and dinner. We expect to see some good racing action in Torrance as we anticipate it will be the first visit for some of our competitors. The final event will take place at our Anaheim venue. With dynamic lighting, great music, and our 3,000 square foot mezzanine overlooking the racing circuit, it is the perfect location to finish off a day of racing. After the last race, each competitor’s fast lap from all 14 races will be tallied and a champion will be crowned, with special recognition going to the 2nd and 3rd place finishers as well. Our VIP tour bus will then transport everyone back to our Irvine location so that they can pick up their cars and drive home.

Speed Channel's Drag Race High Films at K1 Speed Carlsbad

Speed Channel's Drag Race High Films at K1 Speed Carlsbad

K1 Speed’s original indoor karting location in Carlsbad, California was recently featured on the hit Speed Channel television show Drag Race High. In its second season, the show chronicles rival high schools’ auto shop programs as they attempt to build a competitive drag car from scratch. At the end of the season, the schools face off against each other in a climatic drag race to determine which class is the winner. The program is packed full of drama and racing action, and it was our pleasure to be a part of it.

This season, the show is following two rival high schools in San Diego County – El Camino High School and Ramona High School – as they aim to build the ultimate drag car. The auto shop students from each school visited K1 Speed Carlsbad in the midst of their builds to experience the thrill of indoor karting, satiate their appetite for adrenaline, and intimidate their competition a bit! During the course of the day, both El Camino and Ramona High had students qualify with very respectable times in the low 30 second range around our indoor kart track, placing them on the front of the grid for the final battle. In the final race to determine the winner, the students did not disappoint; the final grand prix was an action-packed 16 laps with students from both schools racing bumper-to-bumper while they fought for position. In the end though, it was Phil Wenzel of El Camino High School who took the win. It was an honor to be a part of Drag Race High and we wish both teams the best of luck in the future!
