The Challenge GP race season is under way with round II going this month for a number of K1 Speed locations. The San Diego location kicked off the first round of the second half of 2011 in late July, with an all new track layout, and a full house of drivers all very capable of making a podium appearance and a run for the overall points championship. Double qualifying rounds and corresponding main event rounds gives drivers plenty of opportunity to make a run for the front and places drivers of equal abilities with other drivers based on their qualifying positions. Robby Stanovich is still an unstoppable force as he has proven to be a very fast and young driver at various locations and this was no exception.
After qualifying was done and the fields were set the B Main drivers were out on track first with a full field of drivers and a number of well know returning racers in the group. On the green flag rolling start it was a drag race into turn one, with everyone freight training each-other keeping for some close racing. A few drivers would make position changes back and forth and by the time the checkered flag came out it was Michael Anderson taking the win with Johnny Miller in second and Justin Tolman round out the top three in third.
A Main drivers would close out the night with a number of familiar faces making up the run group, which created some exciting early race action as drivers made some aggressive moves early in the race. After the field settled down a bit the race was on and Robby Stanovich would be out in front and making a run for the checkered flag. Most of the race action was happening mid pack as returning drivers would battle back in forth for position. Once the checkered flag was out it was Robby Stanovich in front with Gabriel Familathe in second and Jared Buccola taking third.
The second round is coming later this month and the points battle is going to be close for this second half to the 2011 season. Come out to San Diego’s best indoor kart racing facility in Carlsbad California and take on the K1 Speed Challenge GP race series yourself and see what the fun is all about.
