K1 Speed in Carlsbad, California hosted their second round of their Challenge GP Race series this past Sunday with a number of very fast drivers making up a fun night of racing. Many returning familiar faces made a run for the pole position early on with Robby Stanovich keeping to his usually form, qualifying on pole for the A-Main later in the evening with a fast lap of 27.249 seconds. The rest of the drivers would fall in place just a few tenths off the pace to create a tight field of drivers for the nights main events.
B-Main drivers were on track first with Danielle Taylor on pole for the green flag rolling start, and she held a commanding lead for a majority of the race. As drivers were playing catch-up Ivan Maric, who had a less than ideal qualifying run started in the back of pack and was making his way through traffic and a run at the front. Ivan found his way around Danielle and would take over the lead late in the race and go on to take the win over the rest of the field. Danielle would finish out her night in second and Julio Rodella rounded out the top three in third.
The A-Main drivers would close out the night with Robby Stanovich on pole for the start, leading the field into turn one in usual freight train fashion. Jared Buccola was close to Robby, but getting pressured by third and fourth place qualifiers Matt Merrill and Justin Tolman. Jared would unfortunately spin out late in the race and drop back to fifth where he would finish out his night. Robbby would maintain his position in the lead and go on for the win, leaving former Carlsbad points Champion Matt Merrill to finish second and Justin Tolman in third.
With the dust cleared and the second round in the books, the mid-way point for the second half of the 2011 race season is just around the corner. There are a number of drivers battling it out for the top spots on the podium and there is plenty of driving talent and races left for anyone to be able to make a podium appearance sometime in the season.
