K1 Speed in North San Diego held the third round of the Challenge GP Race Series this past Sunday with a number of new and returning faces all taking aim at the top qualifying position and the two extra bonus points for the over-all championship points standings. Robby Stanovich was the man to beat posting a 27.273 second lap time to grab the pole position for the main. The rest of the field would fall in line just behind Stanovich qualifying just a few tenths of the pace he had set.
Once the field was set of the main the drivers would come out for single file roll start with Robby Leading the field into turn one. A few drivers would battle back and forth for position mid pack, Cristina Castro unfortunately spun out and dropped to the back and was unable to recover. Robby would run away from the pack and hold a solid lead with Jarred Buccola holing in second and Justin Tolman in third sitting just off Jared’s back bumper for most of the duration of the race. Jon Simms would hold out in fourth and was unable to better his qualifying position during the main. The checkered flag came out and Robby would take the win following by Jared Buccola who began gaining ground on Robby but was unable to catch him. Justin Tolman rounded out the top three on the podium with the rest of the field just a finishing just a few tenths off the pace of the leaders.
The points battle for the overall championship is starting to heat up at K1 Speed in Carlsbad, California. With just three races left in the season, there is still plenty of opportunity for anyone to make a podium finish and a run for the points championship.
