K1 Speed in Carlsbad, California hosted the 4th round of their Challenge GP race series this past Sunday with a number of new faces on hand to take on the fast paced San Diego track layout. With the San Diego Series winding down drivers at the top of the points standings are all focusing on the podium and doing everything they can to find the highest possible position and capture the most points in the standings. One driver in particular who seems to be unstoppable has been young driver Robby Stanovich, which in the second half of the Challenge GP race series put himself atop the podium 15 times and making him the driver to beat. Robby would go on to capture another pole position start here in Carlsbad with a fast lap of 26.906 seconds which was nearly half a second faster than the second place qualifier.
The field was set for the nights main event, and Robby would lead the field into turn one for the green flag rolling start and start his charge on the track which gave him a couple of kart lengths over the rest of the field by turn three. With the rest of the drivers battling for position, Stanovich would take advantage of getting out in clean air early on that would give California Lightning Sprints driver Jon Simms who was sitting in second, a battle with the Jared Buccola and Justin Tolman, both of which are in the overall points battle for the Carlsbad location. Some of the drivers in the back of the field would make their way up a few positions including first timer Christopher Fraser, who came from eleventh to 8th to finish out the night. James Kelsey was another first timer to watch out for as he started the main in seventh and would just miss the podium by one position by the time the checkered flag came out. With the laps winding down Robby Stanovich would be out in a comfortable lead and go on to take the win, Followed by Justin Tolman in second and Jared Buccola in third to round out the top three. Simms would drop back to fifth on the closing laps after driving a hard race.
Just two races are left in the season for the Carlsbad Challenge GP race series many drivers are looking for a way to somehow catch Robby Stanovich. His driving skills are defiantly rewarding him nicely, not only with the K1 Speed Challenge GP Race series but also in the outdoor kart racing arena as well as he helped Team Spectrum make a podium appearance just the day prior in the Machismo 500 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the famous Bull Ring race track.
Check out the schedule for the remaining races this season and come out to the next K1 Speed Challenge GP series event and see if you have what it takes to race the best in the indoor kart racing arena.
