K1 Speed in North San Diego held round one of their 2012 Challenge GP Race series this past Sunday to a packed house of talented drivers all looking for a podium appearance. The reverse ran course proved to bring new challenges as drivers were seeing this course layout for the first time putting everyone on an even playing field. Kyle Wicka would end up taking the pole position with a fast lap of 27.102 seconds to set the pace for the field for the nights main events.
The B-Main drivers would start off the nights main events with pole setter Christina Castro leading the field into turn one, but she would unfortunately spin out and drop back to 6th and eventually fall back to 8th. The race to watch was between the top three with Tyler Sterkel leading the field followed by Neil Nombrado and Troy Van Houten in third. the group would stick nose to tail until the last lap when Neil would find his way around Tyler and go on to take the win. Tyler would hang onto second and Troy Van Houten would cap off the top three on the podium in third.
A-Main drivers would close out the night with pole setter Kyle Wicka leading the group into turn one and hang onto the lead for a few turns when he would spin in turn three but maintain his lead and all drivers somehow maintained their positions as well. Heading into turn 6 Kyle was unlucky again and spun out dropping down a number of positions to seventh but he would fight his way back up to fourth on the last lap to close out his night. That would put Austin Barnes and Justin Tolman in a fight for the lead for the last 5 laps of the race, Justin would make a run on the last lap and got the door closed on him and he was unable to better his position. Austin would go on to take the win, Justin would hang onto second and Chip Graham would close out the top three in third.
With round one in the books it will be a race for the overall points championship with multiple capable drivers aiming for a podium finish and a chance at extra bonus points through making the top qualifying position. Come out February 19th for the second round of the K1 Speed Carlsbad Challenge GP Race series and take on the top indoor kart racers from San Diego.
