K1 Speed in North San Diego wrapped up the final race of 2011 for their Challenge GP race league this past Sunday, with all eyes on the top drivers to see if anyone would be able to bump someone off the podium and take away and over all position in the points standings. With double qualifying rounds points leader Robby Stanovich would have to make a good clean run in order to stay out in front. Stanovich would set the pace for the final with a 26.802 second lap time giving himself a 2 tenths gap over the next driver.
With the main set drivers would head out for the sports-car style green flag rolling start, with Stanovich leading the field into turn one. Second place qualifier Olivia Ma would hang on for a solid 10 laps trying to keep pace with Stanovich and would eventually get passed by the late charging KC Cook. Olivia unfortunately dropped back a few positions and was unable to recover. Mid pack battles had veterans Jonathan Dimock, Justin Tolman and Ivan Maric giving chase trying to best one another on track. Back up front KC found his was around Robby to take the lead and go on for the win, Robby would hold onto second and Justin Tolman found his way into third to close out to top three on the podium.
The over all points championship would go to Robby Stanovich with a 50 point lead over second place finisher Justin Tolman. California Lightning Sprint car driver Jon Simms was able to take third over all in the points chase.
With the 2011 season now in the books, drivers are looking to 2012 and the all new race season which is just around the corner. With multiple race locations throughout Southern California, along with our Phoenix, Arizona, Hollywood Florida, and new Santa Clara location all hosting races starting this coming January, this wont be a season you will want to miss.
