K1 Speed in North San Diego held the third round of their Junior/Youth Challenge GP race series this past Tuesday evening with a number of drivers making up both the Junior (drivers 4′-4’10″) and Youth (drivers 4’10″ and taller) groups, giving some great competitive race action for all on hand. Qualifying would be a single race format giving drivers one race to post their single fastest lap time to place them on pole for the start of the mains. Abraham Costilla would grab the pole position for the Junior run group, and Shaun Deniston would take the pole position int he Youth/Teen group of drivers.
With the mains set the Youth/Teen drivers would go out on track first and set up in s standing start Formula-1 style fashion. With the green flag dropped the drivers would all head into turn 1 with Shaun Deniston holding onto the lead heading into turn 2. Shaun would put some distance between himself and the others to give him self some breathing room and left the rest of the drivers to battle it out for the remaining spots on the podium. As the laps wound down the field would stay in the respective qualifying positions to the checkered flag. The drivers would cross the start/finish line with Shaun Deniston taking the win, followed by Austin Lee in second, and Matt Wang would take third.
Junior drivers would close out the night with Abraham Costilla on pole to lead the field into the first turn on the start, with a number of drivers holding tight to their positions. Many of the drivers making up the field were making it difficult to allow other drivers pass running tight lines on the course and making for a close race for a number of racers. The group would remain in their qualifying positions throughout the duration of the race and finish with Abraham Costilla taking the win, followed by Bravden Stansel in second and Fiona Burns taking third.
With two more races to go, it will be a battle to the finish for the over all points championship as the top 5 drivers in the points chase can easily move up or down in overall position. Come out to our next race May 1st and come race with the best in indoor kart racing competition at K1 Speed in Carlsbad, California.
