K1 Speed Irvine Challenge GP Results

07 September 2011

K1 Speed in the heart of the OC hosted round three of their Challenge GP race series over the Labor Day weekend to a number of drivers all in the chase for the championship. The Super-Track configuration for the Irvine location combines both track configurations giving drivers a fun and challenging course configuration to race on. Double qualifying rounds saw well known Robby Stanovich earn himself another pole position start for the A-Main. Robbie’s recent outdoor experience has extended his driving skills as he is starting to take what he has learned on the outdoor tracks and apply them to the indoor racing series at K1 Speed.

With the fields set, the B-Main drivers would be out on track first with long time veteran driver Kirk Meese showing people how to get things done coming from a 4th place starting positions and working his way to the front thanks to a slight bobble by Brice Maltby after making contact by Mike Buongiorno allowing Kirk to slip by. Kirk would go on tot take the checkered flag with Brice taking second and Tommy Parry would round out the top three on the podium as he found his way past Mike in the closing laps.

Closing out the night would be the A-Main drivers with Robby Stanovich on pole, leading the field into turn one and he immediately began to pull away giving himself a healthy lead by lap 2. This left Nicholas Rebeil and Trevor Buongiorno to battle it out for second and third. Hard charger award should go to Royce Mohler for this one as he worked his way from a back of the pack starting position up to fourth by the time the checkered flag came out. Robby would go on to take the win, with Nicholas taking second and Trevor rounding out the top three.

With the half way point in the books the chase for the overall championship is going to be a battle as everyone is aiming for the top spot on the podium. With 3 more races to go for the Irvine location there is still a good chance anyone could make a podium appearance and move up in the over-all points chase. Keep an eye out for the next race in October and come out and join in on the fun.
