The best in indoor kart racing headed to K1 Speed in Irvine California this past weekend for the second round of the Challenge GP Race Series to be held on the well know Super-Track configuration which is being ran in reverse for the first half of the 2012 race series. With a packed house full of talented drivers from the OC this would be a great night of racing for all in attendance. Qualifying would place KC Cook at the top qualifier position and on pole for the start of the nights A-Main.
Main event rounds would start off the night with the D-Main drivers on the track with Stephanie Switzer on pole leading the field into turn one. Unfortunately cold tires would be her demise early in the race as she spun out and dropped all the way down to the back of the field on the first lap. She recovered well though and made a run for the front and would finish out the night in fourth. The rest of the field would play catch up with the front runners for the duration of the race. The checkered flag would come out and Douglas Young would take the win with Jeff Fuller taking second and Von Miller rounding out the top three. This was a great main event for all, as every driver in the main were first timers.
C Main drivers would be out on track next and this would be another good mix of new drivers to the series. The race would start with a green flag rolling start with Lance Henruchsen on pole. Lance would hold his position and run a smooth line to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field. The group would settle in and mostly all stay in their respective qualifying positions. Once the checkered flag came out Lance would go on to take the win with Brad Drew in second and Jacob Schulze closing out the top three in third.
The next main on track would be a mixed field full of talented drivers to make up the B-Main which proved to make for a great race. With some rookies to the series mixed in, the veteran drivers would quickly take advantage of their experience and the top three would run away from the rest of the field early on to take the top three spots once the checkered flag came out. Nicholas Rebeil would go on to take the win followed by Rob Drew, with Adam Akers rounding out the top three to close out the night.
A Main race action would finish out the evening with pole setter KC Cook taking the green flag rolling start. He got out into clean air early and put some distance on the rest of the field to give himself a comfortable lead for the majority of the race. Jason Foreman and Diego Morales would battle with each other for second and third with the rest of the field in tow looking to make a move to the front. With the top three covering the field by a couple of turns they would go on to take the checkers with KC Cook taking the win, followed by Jason Foreman in second and Diego Morales in third to close out the night. This is also Diego’s first podium finish int he A-Main at K1 Speed in Irvine and may be the sign of things to come in the future.
