K1 Speed in Ontario California hosted round 6 of their Challenge GP race series this previous Sunday to a field of fast and competitive Inland Empire kart racers. The reverse ran super-track layout has proven to be a fun challenging course for the 1st half of the 2011 season, with the points chase coming down to this final race for the 2nd and third place positions. Tyler Pope has been dominate all season and his top qualifying position to give him another pole position for the start of the main with a 54.198second lap time locked him in to the top overall spot.
Once the dust had settled from qualifying the race to watch would be between Ryan Rich, Justin Daughtery and Vincent Burke as they all were battling for position from the start. Pole setter Tyler was in a world of his own as he ran away from the other three, when Vincent went a little too hot into a corner on Justin causing both drivers to fall back. Vincent was moved to the back of the pack because of the move and Justin was moved back up. Ryan Rich would start to make a run on Tyler and caught his back bumper by the last lap, but ran out of time to put any sort of pressure on Tyler who would go on to take the win. Ryan would settle for a respectable second place and Justin rounded out the top three in third. Notable driver was 11 year old RJ Sterns who competes in the Bandelaro class at Irwindale Speedway came out and pulled off a very respectable 4th place finish for his first time out. He will definitely be one to watch in the 2nd half of 2011 if he returns to give some of these guys a run for their money.
The overall points chase would have Tyler Pope at the top of the podium, taking 1st overall, Ryan Rich would take second place overall, with Ron Rich taking the third overall spot on the podium to cap off the top three for the first half of 2011. The new season will be starting in June and with an all new track layout in the works, drivers will have a new set of challenges to conquer with an all new super-track layout to race on.
