The best in indoor karting in the Southwest were on hand at K1 Speed in Phoenix, Arizona this past Sunday for the fourth round of the Challenge GP Race Series. The top drivers in the overall championship standings are in a close battle for the number one spot and with just a few races left its going to be a race to the end. Double qualifying rounds saw Chris Sheehan post the fast laps of the night to grab the pole position for the main.
With the field set, drivers were given a 1/2 lap warm up before they would line up for the green flag rolling start format. Chris would lead heading into turn one but over estimated the corner and it allowed second place qualifier Gunnar Peterson to get under neath and pass Chris on the inside. Gunnar never looked back and put a few kart lengths between himself and the rest of the top three leaving the battle for second and third between Chris Sheehan and Austin Day who was pressuring Chris in various sections on the track looking for a way around. The drivers seemed to settle in after a number of laps and wouldn’t make any positions changes for the remainder of the race. Gunnar Peterson would go on to take the win, Chris Sheehan was able to hold onto second and Austin Day would round out the top three on the podium.
With round four now in the books drivers have just two races left in their season to make a run for the overall points championship, and with a number of drivers all within striking distance of each other the last couple of races are going to see some of the best driving in the Southwest as drivers battle it out. Come out to our next race May 13th and see what the fun is all about.
