K1 Speed in Phoenix, Arizona hosted the second round of their Challenge GP Race Series this past Sunday with a field of all new drivers for the 1st half of the 2012 season. The group would have a mixed amount of talent, which put on a great race and showed there are plenty of indoor karter’s in the Southwest region that are all capable of making a run for the podium and take a shot at the overall points championship. After double qualifying rounds Chris Sheehan would take the pole position with a 27.886 second lap time.
Drivers would take to the track for the A-Main with Chris leading the field into turn one on the green flag rolling start. Chad Morely would get inside Chris on the first turn and quickly put some distance between himself and the rest of the field. The race to watch would be between second through fifth place as drivers seems to all swap positions with each lap. Gunnar Peterson would battle his way up to second for the majority of the race, which left pole setter Chris Sheehan working to keep Patrick Mellody and Andriy Sorokin from getting around him, but on lap four he would get loose and drop a couple of positions with Andriy moving in front of Patrick and Chris dropping in behind Patrick hoping not to loose any more ground. The checkered flag would come out and Chad Morely would go on to take the win Gunnar Peterson would hang onto second and third place would go to Andriy Sorokin to round out the top three on the podium.
With the second round of racing in the books and the month of March marking the half way point for drivers in the overall points chase, there is going to be a push to see who will make it to the front of the field in the points standings. Come out to our next event March 11th and race with the best indoor kart racers in the Southwest with K1 Speed in Phoenix, Arizona.
