K1 Speed in Santa Clara, California played host to the best in indoor kart racing this past Sunday, with the K1 Speed Challenge GP race series, as round five was on the agenda for the Nor-Cal location. With the points championship on the line and just two races left in the championship, drivers are going to be in a tight race for a top podium spot and a chance at the being one of the top three in the overall standings. Qualifying began with a tight battle between a number of drivers as a mix of new and returning drivers made for a great battle on track for the top qualifier position. Ryan Cougil would post the best single lap time of 22.290 to qualify in pole position for the nights A-Main.
The B-main drivers would start off the nights racing with Scott Levin leading the field into turn one on the green flag rolling start. The field would run tight to each other for a number of laps with no one making any major position changes until mid way through the race where Robert Brunelli and Richard Xiang would swap positions in the back of the field. The rest of the drivers would remain in their respective qualifying positions and with the checkered flag showing it would be Scott Levin going wire to wire for the win, with Jason Verbet in second and Andrew Phan round out the top three.
Closing out the night the A-Main drivers would take the track and quickly line up for the green flag rolling start with pole setter Ryan Cougil leading the field into turn one. Ryan would have his work cut out for him as second and third place qualifier Rick Kane and Jonathan Sarceda would quickly battle with each other in the first few corners of the track. Unfortunately Jonathan would spin and fall to the back of the field allowing fourth place qualifier Roddy Balanga to move up to third. The rest of the field would settle in as the lap wound down and with the checkered flag showing it would be Ryan Cougil going wire to wire for the win, followed by Rick Kane in second and Roddy Balanga would round out the top three.
