K1 Speed in Torrance, California kicked off their first 2011 Challenge GP race series this past Sunday on their unique etched concrete racing surface. With the track being run in reverse for this race series, drivers were forced to learn an all new line around the track, and to be competitive they had to learn it fast or be left behind. Qualifying would be a smooth battle between drivers and, after double qualifying rounds, Matthew Widner grabbed pole position with a fast lap of 27.268 seconds.
B-main finalists would start off the night of final rounds with David Comstock leading the group around for the green flag rolling start. David would run away from the pack right off the bat, lapping the back two drivers to take the win. The battle for 2nd and 3rd was the race to watch as 4th place qualifier Derek Esquibel made his way around two other drivers to finish second with 3rd place qualifier Sean Brazeau trying to hold off Derek’s charge to the front. Sean would remain in third to finish out his night and round out the podium in the B-main.
The A-main race action closed out the evening, with overall top qualifier Matthew Widner sitting on pole leading the group around for the rolling start. The racers would freight train into turn one and it wasn’t long before Matthew found himself fighting off Robby Stanovich who came from the 4th qualifying position and made a charge to the front. Robby would get past Matthew to take the lead and never look back, going on to take the checkered flag for the win and Matthew would have to settle for second to finish his night. Steve Jasinski who qualified in 2nd could only watch as Robby got around him and Matthew and he dropped down into third to finish out his night and wrap up the top three in the A-Main.
