K1 Speed in Carson California, held round 5 of its Challenge GP race series this past Sunday, hosting the quickest indoor kart racers in Los Angeles. With the over all points championship on the line it was a tight race for the top qualifying spot in the A Main. Matthew Widner put down the fast lap of the night that would give him the top honors of the overall pole position by the second round of qualifying, earning the 2 bonus points to keep him in the overall points championship hunt.
B main racing action would get the main events of the night going with Michael Arnold on pole for the green flag rolling start. He was followed closely by Tyler Bryant qualified in second place, but was able to run away from the field on the technical concrete surfaced track and go wire to wire taking the checkered flag. Tyler dropped back to 3rd overall to finish out his night. Fourth place qualifier David Messimer worked is way up two spots by the time the checkered flag dropped to take second place to finish out his evening respectively.
Finishing out the night was the A Main drivers with Matthew Widner leading the group for the rolling start. He was untouchable as he ran away from the group and lapped some of the other drivers in the field, going completely unchallenged, this was a well deserved win and helped him out a bit in the overall points chase. The battle to watch was between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th with drivers swapping positions back and fourth. Current points leader John Tanaka, who qualified 4th was able to work his way up to second place by the time the checkered flag came out giving helping him maintain his overall points lead. KC Cook, who started off the race in second dropped back a position to third, to round out the top three on the podium for the night.
There is just one round of racing left for the Torrance Challenge GP Race series, coming December 19th to the technical concrete surfaced layout.
