K1 Speed in Torrance California closed out the first half of the Challenge GP race series this past Sunday to a large number of familiar faces along with a few new people all looking to take on the reverse ran configuration layout for the last time before the new track design goes in within the coming weeks. The over all points chase has been a battle back and forth between a number of drivers including young up and coming driver Robby Stanovich who has had a good presence at multiple K1 locations for the better part of 2011. Qualifying remained straight forward as drivers got the concrete surfaced track warmed up the lap times began to drop and everyone’s true skills would show. Matthew Widner would set a fast lap of 26.730 seconds to set the field for the A-Main on down.
The main events for the evening wold start of with B-Main drivers taking the green flag on the single file rolling start. Michael Arnold and Adam Akers would lead the field into turn one and have their own battle going for 1st and 2nd place with Andre Davillae and Emillio Garcia battling back and fourth for 3rd and 4th. The race remained relatively clean with drivers putting on a strong show until the 14th lap, when Michael and Adam would get a little too close to each-other going into a corner and giving up the positions to Emillio and Andre who were right behind them to take over the number 1 and 2 positions. The checkered flag came out 2 laps later with Emillio going on to take the win, Andre would take second and Michael would round out the top three on the podium with Andre right behind in 4th to finish out their nights. The rest of the field would fall in just a couple of seconds behind them.
A-Main race action would close out the night with Matthew Widner on pole to lead the field on the rolling start into turn one. Robby Stanovich would stick to his back bumper pressuring Widner to make a mistake but Matthew held his ground not giving up any ground to allow Robby to get a nose in on him and slip by. The rest of the field had their own battles going on as everyone seemed to be chasing Widner and Stanovich, when on lap 11 Robby found his way around Matthew and would get out into clean air and pull away. From there on, the field would be chasing Robby, the checkered flag came out and Stanovich went on to take the win with Widner taking a respectable second place finish. David Comstock would come across the line in third to take the final spot on the podium.
With the chase for the overall points champion coming down to the final race Robby Stanovich would edge out Matthew Widner by 8 points to take the overall series championship for the Los Angeles based K1 location. Widner took the second spot on the podium and thanks to his finish in this race Jay Kubota would earn enough points to take third over all beating out Paul Ciralli and David Comstock.
With the first half of 2011 in the books, everyone is looking to the rest of the 2011 season for the K1 Challenge GP race series. Each location is working on new track layouts in the coming weeks with the new season due to start in July, and the points going back to 0 anyone is welcome to come out and take on the best in indoor kart racing.
