In the world of AMA Sport Bike racing there is not a more competitive pair than Josh Hayes and Melissa Paris. On or off the track, both husband and wife take their racing seriously. On a recent visit to K1 Speed in Carlsbad California after finishing out their respective 2010 season the two took to our newest layout with a number of friends of theirs for an afternoon of friendly racing.
Josh finished the 2010 season taking the overall National Championship win with 11 podium finishes, including 7 wins, riding for Graves Motorsports on their Yamaha R1 competiting in the AMA Superbike class. Josh has been a pro for over 11 years as he made his debut in 1999, where he won the 750 Supersport race in Daytona and finished 3rd in the Formula Extreme class for the season. Riding injured for most of the 2000 season, he still finished 3rd in the Formula Extreme class. His hand injury carried into 2001, where he finished 5th in the Formula Extreme and 600 Supersport classes. Just as Josh was getting up to speed in 2002, he seriously injured his hand in an early season crash, causing him to miss the remainder of the year. The 2003 season saw Josh finally healthy enough to fight for a title, and he won the AMA 750 Superstock Championship. The 2004 and 2005 seasons saw Josh compete in the Superbike class where he gained valuable experience prior to his back to back Championship Formula Extreme Titles in 2006 and 2007.
Melissa’s professional racing career has not been as long standing as her husbands, as this San Diego State University Grad took to motorcycles during her freshman year in college and she quickly got involved with club racing. As the first woman to qualify for a World Supersport Championship round, Paris is the highest-placing female rider in Daytona 200 history, finishing 21st in the 2009 race, finishing ahead of her husband. She is looking to the 2011 season to become more competitive than ever, as she battled injuries this past year, and with a new sponsor in the works to help her in her racing efforts she is looking to strong racing season this coming year.
Josh and Melissa always have a great time when they visit us at K1, as it gives them time to unwind from their hectic racing schedules they endure each year. We always enjoy having them in house and watching them use their racing knowledge on our fast paced layout with our indoor electric racing karts, as they battle back and forth trying to out do one another.
As fun as they are to watch – don’t ask them who is the better racer …
