Sprint Cup Pepsi 500 Drivers Race at K1 Speed Ontario!

Monday, October 12th, 2009

With the Sprint Cup Pepsi 500 NASCAR race taking place at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California this weekend, drivers had an opportunity to meet their fans and enjoy indoor karting at K1 Speed Ontario whilst taking breaks from practice, qualifying and the Sunday race. Our indoor karting center in Ontario – conveniently located for Inland Empire, San Bernardino and Riverside residents – is located in close proximity to the 2-mile track, and is a popular stop-off for drivers and teams anytime the track is holding an event. We were pleased to see that with the Sprint Cup NASCAR season winding down and teams vying for all of the points that they could this weekend, this still proved to be the case.

On Thursday, October 8th, K1 Speed Ontario had a visit from Matt Kenseth, driver of the #17 DeWalt car and winner of the 2009 Daytona 500! Local racer Kevin had the opportunity to compete against Matt head-to-head in our high-performance electric karts after winning a contest sponsored by Del Taco and the San Manuel Indian Casino, and was eager to put his skills to the test. With Matt Kenseth opting for kart #17, Kevin and Matt hit the track for a pitched battle! Despite Kevin’s best efforts though, Matt Kenseth was able to take home the win with a best lap time of 27.31 seconds around Track 1 of our indoor kart racing center. Perhaps not surprisingly, Matt was able to leave K1 that day with another notch on his “win” belt.

Kurt Busch, winner of the 2004 Sprint Cup NASCAR Championship and current driver of the #2 Miller Lite car, paid a visit to K1 Speed Ontario on Friday, October 9th. During a brief reprieve from the activities of the race weekend, Kurt was able to meet with fans and enjoy the amenities of our indoor karting center. Our manager Ian was able to chat with Kurt during his visit and made sure to wish him the best of luck for the Sunday race! It was a pleasure having Kurt Busch at our Ontario indoor go kart track and we look forward to seeing him again in the future.

Qualifying day, Saturday, October 10th, brought another big name from the Sprint Cup NASCAR world to K1 Speed Ontario. After setting the fast lap during qualifying to claim the pole position, Denny Hamlin visited our indoor kart racing center with his entire pit crew! Driver of the #11 FedEx car and winner of the 2006 Raybestos Rookie of the Year award, Denny decided to celebrate his success on Saturday with a grand prix race with some of his closest friends! Though Denny was unable to take home the victory on Sunday (thanks to a restart incident with Juan Pablo Montoya on Lap 190), he easily claimed 1st place on Saturday at K1 Speed Ontario after beating his friends and setting a fast lap of 26.11 seconds!

It was an honor hosting some of NASCAR’s top drivers this weekend; we strive to provide our customers with an authentic racing experience at K1 Speed and feel vindicated when racecar drivers from the professional ranks tell us how much they enjoy our centers! If you would like to experience the thrill of wheel-to-wheel racing in a unique and safe environment, or would like to meet some of your favorite drivers from the world of auto and motorcycle racing, visit K1 Speed Ontario.

New Racecar Displays at Our Los Angeles Indoor Go Karting Center

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

K1 Speed is well known for having authentic racing memorabilia and genuine racecars on display at its indoor karting centers, and one of the reasons for this reputation is that we are constantly looking for unique and exciting items to display at our locations throughout Southern California and Seattle, Washington. We like to think that our go kart centers are mini museums celebrating the thrill and glory of motorsport as much as they are indoor go kart tracks, so it is important to us that we add to our collection and rotate our displays on a regular basis. With this in mind, we recently acquired two fantastic cars for our K1 Speed Torrance indoor karting center in South Bay, Los Angeles, and we couldn’t be happier with how they look in our lobby!

Classic Dale Earnhardt Sr. #3 Goodwrench Car

Classic Dale Earnhardt Sr. #3 Goodwrench Car

The first car that we have added to our collection, which we are extremely pleased and honored to have on display, is one of Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s #3 Goodwrench NASCAR stock cars. Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a legend in motorsport and NASCAR circles, and was famously referred to as “The Intimidator” because of his aggressive driving style around the banked ovals of super speedways. The all-black GM Goodwrench livery that he made famous seemed to be a perfect fit for his character and driving personality, as he was a no-nonsense driver once he got out on the track. This simple and striking livery was so well known that it became a part of Dale’s legacy, leading people to give him the Johnny Cash-esque nickname “Man in Black.” It can probably be said without much controversy that as the 555 blue and yellow Subaru livery is to Colin McRae or the red Ferrari Marlboro livery is to Michael Schumacher, the black Goodwrench livery is to Dale Earnhardt Sr., and will forever be his. We are proud to have this car on display not only because the car celebrates the bygone era of the late 80s, but also because it celebrates one of the greatest stock car drivers of all time.

Road & Track / Honda R&D Civic Si Racecar

We have also acquired a 2006 Honda Civic Si racecar that was campaigned by Road & Track magazine at the December 2005 National Auto Sport Association (NASA) 25 Hours of Thunderhill endurance race in Northern California. Driven by Editor Kim Wolfkill and several drivers from Honda Research and Development in Ohio, the car was able to complete 645 laps during the 25 hour race and finish 1st in class. Perhaps even more impressive than the car’s class victory though is the fact that the car was able to finish 4th place overall out of a field of 58 cars! The car is a testament to what can be accomplished with solid engineering and reliability, as the nearly-stock Civic was able to beat much more notable cars around the curvy and hilly circuit thanks to solid preparation and consistent driving.

If you would like to see these cars in person, please feel free to visit our Torrance indoor karting center! After taking in our racing memorabilia, you can enjoy the thrill of wheel-to-wheel racing with our high performance electric karts! We hope to see you soon!

Things to do during the NASCAR Qualifying Day at Auto Club Speedway

It’s that time of year again when race enthusiasts dust off their race gear and the high speed qualifying races take place at Auto Club Speedway. Professional racers come from all over the nation to hit the asphalt of the two-mile track.

This year, the NASCAR Qualifying Day will be held on February 20, along with the Stater Bros. 300 and San Bernardino County 200 on February 21 and the Auto Club 500 on February 22.

Last year’s event attracted a number of drivers to K1 Speed Ontario, just one mile down the road from the massive track. Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series paid a visit to get some fun with many others before the big race, along with Jason White, Chad McCumbee and Erik Darnell from the Craftsman Truck Series. It’s a great possibility that many of this year’s racers will stop in to K1 Speed Ontario for a few indoor racing sessions, so come on by for an opportunity to meet your favorite racers.

The Ontario location is co owned by Boris Said and it offers two distinct tracks. Track 1 offers wide turns ideal for passing racers and Track 2 boasts exciting hairpin turns and extensive straight away runs. The Ontario location also features the longest indoor kart racetrack in the nation when the two tracks combine to create the Super Track on the last Sunday of each month for the Challenge GP.
