A racer slides our electric kart through a corner in our Challenge GP kart league at K1 Speed Irvine!

The first race of the new 2010 Challenge GP season took place at K1 Speed Irvine this past weekend, and the new format seemed to be well-received by the participants! Perhaps the biggest change to our kart league, besides the fact that the race was run in the reverse direction on our Super Track, was the new rolling start. In the past, the racers have lined up on our grid for a Formula One style standing start, but we decided to add one more new element to keep the series interesting and challenging for our regular participants. The rolling start allows the pole sitter to set the pace and potentially jump away from the pack at the drop of the green flag; however, it also gives those in the back of the pack an opportunity to try and build momentum to make a carefully timed pass just as the green flag is waved! Needless to say, we expect to see some dramatic starts as the season goes on.

The A Main race saw regular drivers Toby Rodriguez, David Messimer and David Kelmenson (who competes in our Torrance series on a frequent basis) claim the top spots on the podium. As the flag was waved and the race got underway, Toby put in some amazing laps and ran consistently fast. This performance on track allowed him to build a comfortable lead and take home the 1st place finish in our first race of the new year. Though David Messimer and David Kelmenson did everything that they could to challenge for the lead, on this day Toby was simply unbeatable! We expect to see Toby fighting for the top spot all season long, and we hope to see David Kelmenson put in a full season effort at our Irvine indoor karting track, as we think he has a chance for the championship as well.

In the B Main race, recent Red Bull contest winner Khalifa Alasiri was able to take home the win. No stranger to our A Main races, Khalifa was able to set a good pace during the final, and his experience allowed him to finish ahead of the field. Finishing in 2nd place was Jason Foreman, who was able to defend his position against a hard-charging Brad Drew, who claimed the final spot on the podium. Overall, it was a great B Main race with some superb drives. With his win though, we expect that Khalifa will be eager to fight amongst our A Main competitors next month!

It is no small feat to get into the Top 50 of our ProScore system; there are nearly 750,000 people in our database and new racers join our ranks every day. To achieve a ProScore of over 200 points requires skill and dedication, and we wanted to reward those individuals who have put in the time and effort to be among the best indoor racers in the country! With 2010 now on us, we have reset our ProScore system so that everyone is once again on a level playing field, but if you want to make it into the Top 50, we recommend that you start now, as many of our top racers are already on their way to the magical 200 mark and beyond!

K1 Speed is pleased to support the 2009 Red Bull: New Year. No Limits bash!

To support our friend Travis Pastrana and the Red Bull: New Year. No Limits year-end celebration in Long Beach, we recently held a contest to see who could set the single fastest lap time of the month at our K1 Speed Irvine and K1 Speed Torrance indoor karting centers. The contest took place between December 1st and 24th, and individuals had the chance to compete for the fastest lap time on Track 1 at our Irvine location or at our newest indoor go kart track in Los Angeles for a unique and exciting prize. The two individuals who set the fastest times would each receive a pair of free VIP tickets to the Red Bull tent on New Year’s Eve to watch Travis Pastrana’s daring jump over Long Beach harbor onto a floating barge some 200ft away! The turnout and enthusiasm for the event was great and it was fantastic watching people try for that perfect lap.

Now that the contest has ended, we are pleased to announce the winners and their superb lap times! The top time of the month for Track 1 at K1 Speed Irvine was 21.38 seconds, set by Khalifa Alasiri. The time was nearly broken by Toby Rodriguez, who managed to set a lap time of 21.40 seconds, but in the end, Khalifa’s record ended up being fast enough to claim victory! In Torrance, Challenge GP competitor and regular K1 racer David Kelmenson was able to set a lap time of 26.61 seconds, which was fast enough to earn him 2 free VIP tickets to the Red Bull: New Year. No Limits event on December 31st! We would like to congratulate both of our winners for superb performances and thank them for their support, and we hope that they enjoy the festivities on New Year’s Eve!

*In the event a winner is unable to claim the prize, it will be awarded to the runner-up.

2009 K1 Speed Junior Kart League Champions -- 1st Patrick Landeros | 2nd Brandon Kim | 3rd Hunter Kim

The last round of our 2009 Junior League was held this weekend at K1 Speed Anaheim and it was a great event! The children had a fantastic time and were pleasantly surprised when we ran the track in the opposite direction, as it created an exciting new challenge. With the new layout, Brandon Kim was able to beat the competition and take the race win, ahead of Hunter Kim and Patrick Landeros. The great drive by Brandon tied him in points with Patrick Landeros, but over the course of the season, Patrick had more overall wins so ended up being crowned Series Champion in a closely contested battle! We would like to thank all of the kids and their families who participated in our 2009 Junior League at K1 Speed Anaheim and we look forward to seeing them develop their skills!

The final round of the Jul-Dec 2009 K1 Speed Irvine Challenge GP karting league took place this weekend and a new champion was crowned! There was a full grid for the race, and we were pleased to see that some new faces showed up to compete as well, including K1 Speed-sponsored driver Gustavo Menezes who recently earned two podium finishes at the SKUSA SuperNationals XIII event in Las Vegas, Nevada. With the caliber of drivers out on track, we expected an exciting race and the competitors did not disappoint!

After qualifying, Toby Rodriguez, Taylor Hays and Khalifa Alasiri led the front of the pack in the A Main race, with regular racer and defending champion John Tanaka starting back in seventh place. Gustavo Menezes was able to qualify in sixth in his first ever Challenge GP race and was able to compete head-to-head with some of our veteran racers! Clearly, Gustavo’s skills in TaG 125cc karting helped him adapt to our high performance electric karts and our indoor go kart tracks quite quickly, as he was a rocket out on track!

Challenge GP A Main Podium - 1st Toby Rodriguez | 2nd Taylor Hays | 3rd Khalifa Alasiri

Challenge GP A Main Podium - 1st Toby Rodriguez | 2nd Taylor Hays | 3rd Khalifa Alasiri

At the drop of the green flag, Toby, Taylor and Khalifa quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the field after running consistently fast lap times. Back in the middle of the pack, Gustavo Menezes was on a mission to make up positions and he went to work quickly to gain ground. Gustavo’s first pass was on Ahmed Alasiri; going into a hairpin corner, Gustavo slightly tapped the back of Ahmed’s kart with a late braking maneuver which allowed both John Tanaka and him to take the inside line and make the pass. The next person in Gustavo’s sights was Bill Kreig, who is a very fast and very consistent driver. Heading into a slow speed corner, Gustavo once again late braked and this time was able to pull off a clean pass free of contact. Unfortunately for John, he was not able to follow this time and would tail Bill for the remainder of the race. Toby Rodriguez ended up winning the last round of the season, ahead of Taylor Hays who finished in second place and Khalifa Alasiri who finished third. Defending champion John Tanaka could do no better than sixth and Gustavo Menezes was able to make his way up to fourth in his first ever event!

Challenge GP B-Main Podium - 1st Michael Arnold | 2nd Justin Davenport | 3rd Michael Tekstra (not present)

Challenge GP B Main Podium - 1st Michael Arnold | 2nd Justin Davenport | 3rd Michael Tekstra (not present)

In the B Main race, Michael Arnold was able to climb to the top step of the podium ahead of second place Justin Davenport and third place Michael Tekstra. The B Main event was another exciting race, with veteran Michael Arnold once again proving his worth out on track. This sixth and final round of the season also produced some series champions though! The overall champion for our K1 Speed Irvine Jul-Dec 2009 Challenge GP season is Toby Rodriguez, who accumulated a total of 172 points over six races! Second place overall went to defending champion John Tanaka with 162 points and Bill Kreig claimed third place with 141 points. An honorable mention must also be given to Alton Arnold III who finished tenth in the A Main race but fourth place overall in the season with 138 points, just 2 points shy of Bill Kreig!

Jul-Dec 2009 Challenge GP Series Champions - 1st Toby Rodriguez | 2nd John Tanaka | 3rd Bill Kreig

Jul-Dec 2009 Challenge GP Series Champions - 1st Toby Rodriguez | 2nd John Tanaka | 3rd Bill Kreig

We would like to congratulate all of our winners – both our series champions and our individual race winnrers! Though we should probably be used to it by now, we are constantly impressed with how exciting our Challenge GP events are! We would like to thank all of our fans, supporters and competitors for a great race and a fantastic season, and we hope to see you again next year! Be on the lookout for our 2010 Challenge GP kart league schedule soon – our tracks will be run in the opposite direction next season so veterans and new racers alike will be on a level playing field!

Pro Racecar Driver Billy Johnson Visits K1 Speed Anaheim!

Billy Johnson and the FX Motorsports Development / Cricket Wireless Acura NSX racecar

Billy Johnson is an accomplished racecar driver who has competed in a variety of classes, including the Grand Am Rolex series, Grand Am Koni Challenge, SPEED World Challenge, Formula Star Mazda Pro and Formula BMW open wheel series. He is perhaps best known though as the driver of the FX Motorsports Development / Yokohama / Cricket Wireless Acura NSX racecar in the popular Redline Time Attack series. In 2009, Billy dominated the Redline Time Attack series, taking the overall win in 5 of the 8 races and securing the Unlimited Class RWD (rear wheel drive) championship. At the young age of 23, Billy has already made a name for himself in the industry and we expect to see him further develop his skills and his career in the future!

Racecar driver Billy Johnson celebrates at our K1 Speed Anaheim indoor karting center after setting one of the fastest times of the week

This week, Billy was finally able to take a break from his busy schedule (he recently competed in the last round of the Redline Time Attack at Auto Club Speedway and will be heading up to Northern California for the 25 Hours of Thunderhill this weekend) and decided to visit our K1 Speed Anaheim indoor karting center in Orange County, California for a bit of fun! Our Anaheim track features both slow speed technical corners and a long back straightaway with a high speed braking zone, and can be tricky to master for even veteran K1 racers, but Billy quickly went to work dissecting the course! On his second run of the day, Billy ran a 29.71 second lap time, which was good enough for a spot at the top of our Top Times of the Week leaderboard! Everyone at K1 Speed was impressed with Billy’s skills behind the wheel and his ability to quickly adapt to our electric karts; being able to run one of the fastest times of the week in only his second time in the kart is a good illustration of his natural racing abilities.

It was a pleasure having Billy Johnson stop by our indoor go kart track and we hope to see him again soon! If you would like to beat Billy’s lap time of 29.71 seconds around our current track configuration, stop by K1 Speed Anaheim and see for yourself if you have what it takes to compete against a professional racecar driver!

K1 Speed Irvine Challenge GP Kart Racing Results – Nov 2009

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

The attendance for the penultimate round of our July-December 2009 K1 Speed Irvine Challenge GP season was fantastic, with 26 competitors from throughout Orange County and Southern California showing up to compete at our indoor karting center. Considering that many of us have had to be a bit more careful with expenses this year, we have been continually blown away by the enthusiasm and support that people have shown for our Challenge GP kart racing series. At our Irvine location alone, we have had nearly a hundred different individuals come out to participate in our racing series; we cannot thank our customers enough for their dedication! The round this weekend was another great event that produced close racing and good conversation, and it should go without saying that we are very much looking forward to seeing how the season will come to a close in the final round next month!

Overall point leaders Toby Rodriguez and John Tanaka were both very fast in qualifying and started in the A-Main race at the front of the pack. As both are fighting for the championship, we weren’t surprised to see each give it his all on track and both men ran near flawless races. Despite his best efforts though, John was unable to best Toby Rodriguez, who took his fourth win of the season. With only one round remaining in the series, Toby has a good chance of taking the Challenge GP championship away from John. Khalifa Alasiri, who has been performing well all season long, fell in behind John to take the final spot on the podium.

In the B-Main race, Alfredo Anguiano held off a hard-charging Bill Kreig to take the win, though there were several moments where it looked as if Bill was going to make the pass. As the spectators can attest, Alfredo earned his win this Sunday, because Bill did not make it easy on him! Though Alfredo and Bill didn’t get to compete in the A-Main this weekend, they can comfort themselves knowing that they delivered a fantastic performance for the crowd! Following closely behind the back-and-forth battle between Bill and Alfredo was regular Jonathan Wright, who ended up finishing the race in 3rd place.

If there was one race that perhaps didn’t go as smoothly as it could have, it was the C-Main! As the karts got funneled into the first series of turns, Rob Drew unfortunately was spun out and lost several positions. Despite falling victim to the mayhem of the first several laps and ending up in last place, Rob was determined out on track and was able to make his way back up to 6th position by the end of the race. Though Rob was unable to earn a podium finish, he definitely earned the respect of his competitors! The race winner was Joe Erwin, who finished ahead of 2nd place finisher Steve Wetterau. The final spot on the podium was taken by Formula Drift driver Justin Pawlak, who campaigns the Mazda RX-8 drift car for the Bergenholtz Racing team. Justin was able to quickly adapt his drifting skills to our karts, as he performed very well against some veteran K1 racers.

Join us at K1 Speed Irvine on December 6th for the final round of our Challenge GP indoor karting series. The championship will be on the line, and the racing is sure to be exciting!
