Making his NASCAR debut, K1 Speed customer and friend Travis Pastrana successfully avoided multiple crashes last Saturday night in the Irwindale Speedways Toyota All-Star Showdown and came home with a sixth place finish. The 225 lap event, which was broken down into 3 segments (100 laps, 100 laps, and 25 laps) featured the best drivers from the K&N East and West Pro Series – largely considered to be just a level below the popular NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Pastrana was able to avoid three early race mishaps though one dented his front fender but his crew was able to successfully repair the damage and Travis worked his way back up through the field impressively. During the final caution, Pastrana was sitting in 9th with 9 laps to go and he sucessfully found his way up to his 6th place finishing position when the checkered flag dropped.
After the race, Pastrana was visibly excited. “This sport is so much fun, it’s super competitive, but I have so much to learn,” Pastrana stated in an interview with SPEED. “If this is our starting point — hopefully it’s our starting point… then we’ll continue to learn from here.”
Travis also did something that is almost unheard of – after his final interviews he pointed at a group of fans still waiting in the stands and he shouted “I’m coming up to see you guys!” Travis then went off-track and around to the main grandstands where he signed autographs and shook hands with fans, thanking them for supporting him and for making the night’s event a success.
Pastrana is planning on competing in seven Nationwide events this season, and will be making his debut in that series later in 2011.
