Sunday’s Challenge GP was nothing short of thrilling. Several position changes throughout the pack kept this race exciting from start to finish. Tyler Hicks quickly pulled away from the group to gain a commanding lead and take the win. Brandon Walsh claimed second and Alex Filsinger rounded out the podium in third.
See you September 1st for round three of the season!
What a start to season 2 of the 2013 Carlsbad Challenge grand Prix! There were a few new GP racers this month who all did great. After our second round of qualifying, local racer Paige Kaufman narrowly edged out Brandon walsh by 0.03 seconds with a fastest qualifying lap of 24.747 seconds. This qualifying intensity surely carried on to the final position race and proved to be nothing short of exciting for 16 long laps. The race proved to be a battle for the 2nd and 3rd podium positions. Several critical position changes took place early, leaving top qualifiers scrambling to regain position. In the end, racer Brandon Walsh, known for his ability to run crazy fast laps rounded out the podium in 3rd. Benjamin plant, who proved he can hang with the best, kept the heat on for 16 laps to claim a second place podium finish. And last but certainly not least, Paige Kaufman, this month’s only female competitor proved she has what it takes to beat some of San Diego’s best racers. Paige held a commanding lead for the majority of the race and proceeded to make her mark here at K1 Carlsbad by taking 1st position in race number 1 of the season 2 Challenge Grand Prix here in Carlsbad, California.
Tuesday’s event was a great start to season 2 of the K1 Speed Junior League 2013. Known around these parts for laying down fast laps, Landon Southwell did what he does best and ran the fastest qualifying time with a 30.364 sec. lap time. The Final race surely lived up to the hype with safe, yet thrilling K1 racing action. These future pros would not let a podium finish out of their sights for a moment and battled it out to the finish. In the end it was Landon Southwell rounding out the podium in 3rd, Taylor Gibson in 2nd, and your very own Davis Southwell claiming the victory with a 1st place finish. We had a very exciting 6th and final race for Carlsbad’s 1st Challenge GP season. There were moves that were made in this race that stunted some driver’s final points totals and helped others climb ahead of the competition. Brandon Walsh qualified with the fastest time and was able to start and finish in the top spot because of this. The battle for 2nd and 3rd lasted the entire race between Charles, Benjamin and Paige following closely behind. In the first half of the heat KC was spun out sending him from 4th all the way back to 7th. He impressively was able to climb back up a couple spots and secure a 5th place finish. Although he came in 5th for this race, the points he accumulated gave him just the nudge he needed to win overall for season 1′s Challenge GP.
Last night’s event included all of our usual Jr. drivers and a couple of new faces. Landon Southwell was able to secure pole position with his qualifying laptime of 31.01. Although the rolling start started as one of the best we have seen, it was soon stunted by a spin out in the 2nd turn of lap 1. Unfortunately Brayden Stansel was affected most by this when his spin out sent him from 2nd place all the way to the back of the pack. During this confusion and while most drivers were attempting to stay out of the mix, Carlee Weber was able to take advantage of the situation by ducking and dodging her way from 8th place all the way up to the number 2 spot which she held for the remainder of the race. Landon was able to keep ahead of the rest of the pack for the entire race where he kept and help 1st place for this final event. The rest of the drivers moved up or sown about 1 place from where they started. After tonight’s race it will be an exciting finish to the season to see where everyone stands in points for our last event of this season.
