K1 Speed in South Florida hosted the next to last round of their Challenge GP Race Series this past Sunday with another packed house full of drivers all chasing after a podium finish. Double qualifying rounds would give drivers multiple chances to put down the quickest lap possible and grab the pole position for the nights A-Main. When the dust cleared Michael Apuzzo would take the top qualifier position for the nights A-Main.
The C-Main drivers would start off the nights racing and would see the most action on track with a number of positions changes made throughout the race. The most notable would be last place starter Kaila Fives who worked from the rear of the field all the way up to the front to take the win. Pole setter Alexander Burkhardt would drop to second and Billy Fives would round out the top three on the podium.
B-Main drivers were out on track next for the green flag rolling start and it would be a drag race into turn one as drivers would freight-train with each other for the first few corners. The field would spread out a bit and everyone stayed in the same position as their respectable qualifying spots. The laps would wind down and at the start/finish line Raphael Burkhardt would go wire to wire for the win, followed by Bryant Garcia in second, and Jim Page would cap off the top three on the podium.
Closing out the night would be the A-Main drivers taking the green flag rolling start, with overall top qualifier Michael Apuzzo leading the field into turn one. This would be a full field of talented indoor drivers and it showed as the group held tight to each other for the first few laps. The field would spread thin and drivers would remain in their respectable qualifying positions till the checkered flag was thrown. Michael Apuzzo would go wire to wire for the win followed by Charles Abbott in second and Raul Leoni would take third.
With just one race left to go in the first half of the 2012 Challenge GP Race Season, and the top drivers in the points chase all withing striking distance of each other, it will be a race to the finish for the overall championship. Anyone familiar with contemporary motor racing, of nearly any kind, knows the name Boris Said. His shock of curly dark brown hair, signature goatee and his success in so many forms of motorsport have made him a household name in households where racing is spoken.
In his 25-year career as a race car driver, Said has competed in the United States, Europe and Australia in everything from off road races to stock cars, prototypes and sports sedans in sprint and endurance racing. Beginning in 1988 as the Sports Car Club of America’s Rookie of the Year, Said went on to win Showroom Stock GT at the Runoffs for three consecutive years. Those successes led him from the ranks of amateur to professional racing driver, and to this day, Said is the only American driver to have won the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring.
In addition to his successes in Europe, Said has competed in the SCCA Trans Am series, IMSA in which he won 15 races, including the 1997 and 1998 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and the 1998 12 Hours of Sebring. Said also began racing in the NASCAR series in 1997 with the then-titled Craftsman Truck Series. His experience in sports racing led other NASCAR teams to employ him as a driving coach to other Sprint Cup drivers when the tour visited road courses such as Infineon and Watkins Glen.
In addition to co-owning K1 Speed karting centers and running his BMW dealership in Murrieta, Calif., Said still maintains a racing schedule on three continents. Clearly, he isn’t slowing down.
TrackHQ.com caught up with him by phone.

K1 Speed in South Florida held round four of the K1 Speed Challenge GP Race Series this past Sunday with a full mix of new and returning drivers all looking for a shot at the podium. With the recent driving school held by Patricio Jourdain the week before, many drivers were looking to make use of their newly acquired skills adding to the level of competition on the Super-Track configuration layout. Qualifying would be straight forward with Charles Abbott taking the pole position over the rest of the field.
The B Main drivers would be out on track first with Edgar Moyano leading the field from the pole position and holding off the field for a majority of the race. Drivers would shuffle back and forth a couple of positions for a number of laps, one driver Javier Bult, made up the most ground by coming from a fifth place starting position up to second just as the checkered flag dropped on the field. Edgar Moyano unfortunately dropped back a couple of spots on the last lap to a hard charging Jordan Robertson who made a move on the last lap to get around Edgar. With the checkered flag out on the podium Jordan would take the lead followed by Javier Bult in second and Edgar Moyano would close out his night in a respectable third.
Capping off the night were the A-Main drivers with veteran driver Charles Abbott leading the field from the pole position into turn one. With the field holding tight they would freight-train around with each-other for a couple of laps before settling in and drivers would start making position changes as the laps wound down. Unfortunately for Charles he would give up the lead on lap 6 to Rodney Williams who was making quick work of the field moving up to the front and Charles found himself dropping back to fourth to close out his night. The rest of the field remained in their qualifying positions with the checkered flag showing Rodney Williams would go on to take the win, followed by Anthony Ospino who held his ground their entire race, with Michael Apuzzo rounding out the top three on the podium.
