Teams Race for a Cure During Wings for Life Scavenger Hunt
K1 Speed is proud to have sponsored and participated in a race to find a cure for spinal cord injuries during the Wings for Life Scavenger Hunt this last Saturday, November 3.
The scavenger hunt saw 36 teams of four individuals each that raced to the headquarters of some of the biggest names in the action sports industry – Fox Racing, Oakley, Volcom, and K1 Speed – and competed in thrilling challenges and searched for Red Bull cans scattered around the premises to earn points redeemable for some awesome prizes and swag – like K1 Speed gear and gift cards.
Embedded in these teams were professional athletes – several of whom have suffered spinal cord injuries themselves. They all participated in games of skill such as archery, basketball, axe throwing, hiking, skateboard building, Crazy Cart racing, and of course, indoor go-kart racing!
We built a couple of purpose-built go-karts with hand controls that allowed disabled participants to compete in the K1 Speed Challenge with other participants. Two teams at a time raced on both of our tracks at Irvine. The team with the smallest combined time from the two tracks were the winners. We’re happy to report that our team won at home as the Fastest Team!
At the end of the event, a massive after party was thrown for all participants and awards were handed out for teams that had the best team spirit and most points. Other awards were given by the sponsors depending on the challenges held at that location, such as “Fastest Hiker” (Oakley), “Fastest Skateboard Build” (Volcom), and our “Fastest Team Award”. Since we won our own competition, we gladly passed the prize (a Grand Prix Race Package for 8 people) on to the second fastest team.
The overall points winners at the end of the day were “The Wild West”, with a total of 197 points. Our own “K1 Speed Racer” team put in an admirable job, bringing home 113 points. The team who raised the most donations were “Team SOBE PROMOS” who were able to raise $10,062, with one member of that team taking home the top individual donation – Chris Ferriter raised a whopping $7,712! In all, a total of over $50,000 had been raised for the foundation by the end of the event.
The Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation was founded by Red Bull CEO Dietrich Mateschitz and two-time motocross champion Heinz Kinigadner to find a cure for spinal cord injuries. The foundation has already funded 174 spinal cord research projects worldwide with help from ambassadors like 13-time F1 grand prix winner, David Coulthard.
But funding the research is costly, so if you were unable to join in on the fun this year, donations are still happily accepted at the official website until the end of November. Just click the button below to visit their site and donate to this terrific foundation.
