A Brief History of Independence Day and its Activities

picture of the declaration of independence

As you probably know, Independence Day celebrates the day that the Continental Congress officially adopted Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence – July 4, 1776.

What you may not know is that the vote for independence actually took place two days prior, on July 2. In fact, John Adams actually wanted July 2nd to be our Independence Day. So much so, that Adams is rumored to have turned down any invitations for a party on July 4 in protest.

Early 4th of July activities used to include going to concerts, attending bonfires, and firing muskets and cannons. And yes, there was even drinking! George Washington himself issued double rations of rum to all his soldiers so they could celebrate in 1778.

Over the decades, July 4th activities developed into the ones we’ve come to know and love today. People celebrated with fireworks as early as 1777, and parades, family gatherings, and barbecues became favorite activities over time.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t until 1941 that Independence Day became an official federal holiday. That’s 165 years later after the historic day!

Why K1 Speed Should Be Part of Your 4th of July Activities

So why is indoor go kart racing at K1 Speed something you should do as a Fourth of July activity? Here are 5 reasons.

1. Go Kart Racing is an American Original

For starters, go kart racing was born right here in the USA! Don’t worry – we won’t give you another history lesson. But the first go kart was invented in Southern California by Art Ingels in 1956. Needless to say, it’s become a beloved sport across the United States (and the world) ever since.

2. Both Kids AND Adults Can Enjoy This Activity

Secondly, indoor go kart racing is something that both kids and adults can enjoy. Far too often, parents have to sacrifice their own fun when choosing an activity for kids. But not at K1 Speed. We have go karts for kids that go up to a peppy 20-25mph. And we have adult go karts that will launch you to 45mph in a matter of seconds. This means both parent and child can enjoy their own thrilling experience around our tracks.

3. A Weather-Proof Independence Day Activity

If you’re like us, you’re checking the weather predictions for July 4tth as soon as they’re available. The last thing we ever want is a cloudy evening sky to spoil the local fireworks show, or even worse – rain. But there’s good news. K1 Speed is an all-weather activity because we’re indoors!  This means every day is a good day to go racing at K1 Speed. And if weather spoils the fireworks in your town, you’ve now got a back-up plan.

4. Experience True Freedom and Independence

Hate being told how fast you can drive? Tired of your passenger telling you to slow down? Sick of speeding tickets?

Enjoy the amazing freedom of a road with no speed limits. In fact, we want you to go as fast as possible on our track! And since all of our karts are single-seaters, you don’t need to worry about making your passenger sick or scared. Now that’s independence!

Don’t want to go too fast? You’ve got the freedom to go any speed you feel comfortable.

And kids can finally drive their own car! For many of our junior racers, K1 Speed is their first behind-the-wheel experience.  So even the little ones get to experience what it’s like to drive fast.

5. We’ve Got American Food & Beer

Family eating

At most locations, we offer an assortment of American food favorites like burgers, brats, bbq brisket, wings, chicken tenders, and more at our on-site eatery. Plus, many of locations serve beer and wine, so you can wash your meal down with a cold domestic brew.
