What is Star Wars Day?
Star Wars Day occurs every year in May as a celebration of the insanely popular science fiction franchise. The date was chosen due to its punny similarity to the films’ iconic phrase “may the force be with you”.
Interestingly, the first recorded reference of this pun being used was when Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1979 – just two years after the original film’s debut. The London Evening News placed a congratulatory advertisement which read, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
For the last several decades, grassroots movements around the world have increased year after year, and celebrations have ranged from local events to major corporate publicity stunts. Since 2013, The Walt Disney Company (now the owners of the franchise) has officially observed the holiday at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
